HOW TO MAKE MOVEMENT PART OF YOUR ROUTINE
Motivation comes and goes. Here's how to make movement part of your routine without needing a motivational speech every Monday morning.
You don't need to wake up every morning excited to work out. In fact, we'd be slightly concerned if you did. Motivation comes and goes, it's unreliable. But routines stick.
The trick isn't finding endless motivation to move your body but making movement such a normal part of your week that you don't have to think about it every single time.
1. PUT IT IN THE CALENDAR
If pilates only happens when you happen to have some time left, pilates probably isn't happening. Book the class, pay for it, block the hour. Decide which days you're working out before the week gets busy. Treat movement like any other appointment you intend to keep.
2. FIND SOMETHING YOU ACTUALLY LIKE
You do not have to become a runner because everyone on Instagram suddenly owns a running vest. You don't have to do pilates just because it's trending. Yoga. Tennis. Strength training. Swimming. A long walk with a podcast. The best workout is the one you'll still be doing six months from now. Bonus points if you genuinely look forward to it.
3. MAKE IT EASY TO SHOW UP
Preparation is the key, baddie. Put your workout clothes out the night before. Keep your tennis bag packed. Book the studio close to work. Choose the gym that's actually on your way home. The fewer decisions standing between you and your workout, the better.
And yes, buying a workout set you can't wait to wear absolutely counts as preparation.
4. BUY THE CUTE OUTFIT
This brings us to one of our favourite hobbies: shopping! Few things get us moving faster than a new workout set. Tennis skirts, matching sets, sneakers... Move like a baddie.Â
5. STOP TRYING TO HAVE A PERFECT WEEK
Missed Monday? Go Tuesday. Had a terrible workout? It still counts. Went for a walk instead of doing the HIIT class you'd planned? Also counts. One imperfect day doesn't need to become an imperfect week. Think in weeks, not days. Missed yesterday? Fine. The week isn't over yet.
6. SCHEDULE THE REST DAY TOO
Rest is part of the routine. Your body needs time to recover, and your life needs room for things that aren't workouts. So take the rest day. Have the long lunch. Sleep in.
Then get back to it.
THE BADDIE RULE
Don't wait until you feel motivated.
Make the plan. Put it in your calendar. Show up more often than you don't.
Discipline, but make it sustainable.
